The aim of the JSRN is to contribute towards the development of joint spaces for research co-operation and innovation by enabling the sharing of knowledge and expertise, as well as wider suggestions for understanding and addressing the complex issues associated with journalism safety.
The JSRN serves to facilitate the exchange of ideas, publications and networking opportunities through conferences, seminars and workshops as well as the development of research agendas and policy proposals.
We also seek to present and promote academic voices in the context of the development of international policy agendas on journalism safety and the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
The JSRN is also committed to act as an advocate on behalf of media workers who are or have been subject to violence and intimidation, to provide intellectual and moral and all other forms of support for media workers who have been unjustly treated.
The JSRN has contributed to UNESCO’s multi-stakeholder consultation on strengthening the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity during 2017. A co-ordinated response from academia to the consultation process, with a specific focus on how best to harmonise some of the work of academia within the implementation of the UN Plan, was included in the resulting texts (Outcome document and Final report). In addition, support for a joint statement to include an explicit reference to the role of academic institutions and research in the Jakarta Declaration, which stands as a summary of the results of the UNESCO 2017 World Press Freedom Day conference in Jakarta, was also mobilised through the JSRN. The JSRN also mobilised support for including the mentioning of the importance of academic networks to strengthen journalism safety in the Accra Declaration of the 2018 World Press Freedom Day conference in Ghana.
