My research includes a study of the normative environment for journalists in Africa and the relationship between the global and the local in codes of ethics and professional standards. I am interested in how globalized codes and standards are interpreted, applied and negotiated in local socio-cultural, political and economic environments. My work in this area has included collaboration with researchers in other parts of the world with the aim of exploring the theoretical foundations and the practical applicability of a global media ethic.
I am also involved with a multi-country study on political communication in new democracies. This study, spanning eight countries in Africa, Latin America, Central Europe and South-East Asia, examines the relationship between journalists, politicians and political intermediaries in eight countries.
