Jock Gallagher is a journalist and campaigner for freedom of the media; he was founder chair of the Press Freedom Network (with members including NUJ, CIoJ, Society of Editors,The Newspaper Society, International Press Institute,Commonwealth Broadcasting Association, Commonwealth Press Union, Association of European Journalists, International News Safety Institute, UNESCO, Amnesty International, Campaign for Press and Broadcasting Freedom, Article XIX, Reporters sans Frontieres, Exiled Journalists Network and English PEN) 2001-06; chair of UNESCO's Freedom of Expression Committee 2004-06; executive director Association of British Editors 1990-99, editor British Editor 1991-99; honorary member of the Society of Editors since 1999; member of the Chartered Institute of Journalists and the Association of European Journalist; founding Fellow of the Institute for Contemporary Scotland; he was deputy chair of a local FE college and a member of the FEFC 1998-2003; he worked for twenty five years with the BBC as producer, editor and programme head.
